Women’s Lacrosse: Hawks Drop Spring Break Opener to #21 MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's lacrosse team fell to #21 MIT, 17-11, to open their Spring Break contests on Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field.
 
MIT out shot Roger Williams 32-28, while the Hawks put 20 shots on cage. Roger Williams went 15-for-19 on clear attempts, while MIT completed 90 percent of their attempts going 18-for-20. MIT held the ground ball edge by one, holding a 14-13 edge. The Hawks did win the draw control battle winning 19 of the 32 attempts.
 
Julia Kelley (Foxborough, Mass.) had seven points, scoring four goals with three assists, while Kimmy Creegan (Ramsey, N.J.) had four points with four goals. Allie Shamberger (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) added a pair of goals in the contest, with Mia Pantano (Reading, Mass.) recording one strike for the Hawks. Miranda Hayes (South Burlington, Vt.) had seven draw controls in the contest, with Karli Chapin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) following with six. Creegan added five, while Kate Shultz (Portsmouth, N.H.) threw one into the mix. Creegan and Grace Rocheleau (West Hartford, Conn.) had three caused turnovers a piece, with Rocheleau adding four ground balls.
 
MIT opend the contest with a 7-0 run, before the Hawks responded with Kelley scoring on a player down chance when Chapin found Kelley with 7:02 remaining in the second quarter. Creegan followed with a goal of her own to cut the Hawks' deficit down to five. MIT potted four straight to end, taking an 11-2 lead, but Creegan put one in with 1:06 remaining before the break to trail by eight heading into the break.
 
Roger Williams responded with two goals in back-to-back goals to start the third, but Sydney Pyon had a goal to take a 12-5 lead. Shamberger scored her second goal of the contest but was cancelled out by Pyon who struck for a fifth time in the contest.
 
Ashley Thomas and Meredith Arterburn added goals for MIT, before the Hawks scored three straight to cut the lead down to six with 7:46 remaining in regulation. MIT added another pair of goals before Creegan and Kelley struck to cut the deficit to six again to end the contest.
 
Roger Williams (1-3, 0-0 CCC) will take on Union, Monday, Mar. 11 at 5:00 pm at Frank Bailey Field in Schnectady, N.Y. before facing Colby to round out Spring Break on Sunday, Mar. 17 at Bill Alfond Field.
