SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's lacrosse team defeated Western New England on Wednesday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup, maintaining their early lead throughout the matchup, 20-12.
The Hawks were led offensively by
Julia Kelley (Foxborough, Mass.) who tallied 13 points with six goals and seven assists in the matchup.
Emma Terino (East Meadow, N.Y.) chipped in six points with three goals and three assists, while
Kimmy Creegan (Ramsey, N.J.) added four goals and an assist, with
Karli Chapin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) tallying four goals.
Defensively, Creegan had eight draw controls in the game with eight ground balls and three caused turnovers. Chapin added five draw controls, with a pair of ground balls and caused turnovers.
Zoey Cormican (Rochester, N.H.) made eight saves in cage.
The Hawks opened the game with Terino scoring just 48 seconds into the contest with
Ella Waryas (Foxborough, Mass.) adding a goal just under a 1:20 later. Kelley then added a goal to put the Hawks up 3-0, before Ally Ferraro recorded her first of four goals for Western New England. The Hawks responded with a 4-0 run to end the first quarter, holding a 7-1 lead.
In the second quarter, the Golden Bears scored three straight goals to open the second frame, cutting the deficit to three. Waryas struck again to give the Hawks an 8-4 lead, with Creegan then adding another goal 1:56 later. Ferraro struck again with 1:06 remaining in the half, putting the Hawks ahead 9-5 going into the half.
Roger Williams opened the second half with a pair of goals, but Ella Henry put the Golden Bears on the scoreboard with 8:56 remaining cut the deficit back down to five. Over the final 8:13 of play in the third quarter, the Hawks out scored Western New England 4-2, holding a 15-6 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of action.
The Golden Bears added four goals in the fourth quarter, but Roger Williams responded with five of their own to close out the win.
Roger Williams (6-7, 5-0 CCC) will travel to Beverly on Saturday, Apr. 13 at 12:00 pm to meet Endicott in a CCC matchup. The Hawks will then play their regular season home finale on Tuesday, Apr. 16 at 7:00 pm.
