BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams women's volleyball team ends their tournament play 2-0 with victory over New England College, 3-1 (25-10, 25-23, 13-25, 25-14) on Saturday afternoon at the RWU Invitational.
The Hawks hit .266 as a time, with 51 kills on 143 attempts.
Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) led the team with 15 kills, while
Angela West tallied 10 kills, with
Taylor Joyner (Ashburn, Va.) adding eight kills.
Ava Mattiucci (North Kingston, R.I.),
Izzy Unsworth (Milford, N.H.), and
Lily Winsten (Rockledge, Fla.) collected three aces a piece.
Defensively, West led the way with a team high of two solo blocks while also being credited with six block assists.
Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) tallied one solo block in addition three block assists.
Emma Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) and Mattiucci contributed 41 assists on the day with Bosco recording 21 of the assists. Meanwhile,
Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) recorded 21 digs in the match to led the team.
New England College was led in kills by Lily-Anne Heyword with 11 in the match in addition to leading the team in aces with two. Aurora Gutierrez-Macias had a team high of 12 assists and 16 digs for the Pilgrims.
In the opening set, the Hawks jumped out to a 11-4 lead before the Pilgrims were able to cut into the deficit with back-to-back points. The Hawks strung together back-to-back 4-0 runs to help extend their lead before a from Winsten gave Roger the first set.
The second set saw the Hawks get out to an early lead with which they maintained until a 4-0 run by the Pilgrims that tied the set 20-20. The two squads traded points until the Pilgrims were able to string together another 3-0 run with a kill from Heywood putting the Pilgrims at set point. A service error from Roger secured the second set for the Pilgrims.
In the third frame, the Hawks bounced back with a commanding 10-4 lead before a couple of sideouts put the Pilgrim within four after a kill from Winters making it 12-8. A 4-0 run by the Hawks pushed their lead to eight before the Pilgrims were able to tally a couple points. The Hawks continued to extend their lead with back-to-back 3-0 runs before Felix capped off the set with a kill.
The fourth set saw the Pilgrims jump out to 3-0 lead before the Hawks were able to tie the set at 5-5 with a kill from Jackson. The two squads traded points until the Hawks went on a 3-0 rally to put them ahead by three. The Hawks proceeded to go on their longest run of the afternoon by scoring seven straight points putting them up 22-11. Roger took the last set after three straight points.
Roger Williams (2-0, 0-0 CNE) will now travel to face Johnson & Wales on Wednesday, September 4
th at 7pm before reentering tournament play at the UMass-Boston Invitational Friday, September 6
th where they will take on the host school at 5pm.
