PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In non-conference action, the Roger Williams University women's volleyball team defeated Johnson & Wales on Wednesday evening in the Wildcat Center, 3-0 (20-25, 25-21, 29-27, 25-18).
The Hawks led the match scoring 64 points off of 48 kills, with 11 points coming off aces to the Wildcats eight. Johnson & Wales led with six blocks in the matchup, but the Hawks overcame the deficit with 45 assists and 69 digs.
Individually, Roger Williams was led by
Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) with 13 kills in the matchup, along with
Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) who recorded 11 kills and 16 digs for a double-double.
Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) recorded her 1,00
th career assist, while also serving up 22 helpers on the day.
Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) had 21 digs, while
Angela West (Riverview, Fla.) was in on five blocks.
For JWU, Peyton Oliver and Nevaeh Arnold each recorded 10 kills, with Sophia Diphilippo and Olivia Immell each adding double-digit assists. Sierra Nausieda had 16 digs in the matchup.
In the opening set, the Hawks fell behind 13-6 to the Wildcats but were able to climb back within three, with the score at 19-16, when Mattiucci assisted Jackson for her fourth kill of the game and 1,000
th of her collegiate career. Roger Williams would cut the lead down to one off a kill by Picchetti, at 21-20, before the Wildcats scored four straight to cut take the set.
The Hawks took a commanding 21-16 lead in the second set, but the Wildcats were able to cut the lead to three after a kill by Oliver set up a 24-21 point, that Picchietti put to the floor to take the set.
In the third, with the Hawks leading 24-21, Johnson & Wales came roaring back to level the score at 24-24 extending the set. After the Hawks led 25-24, JWU took the lead at 26-25, but the Hawks were able to level the score at 27-27. Roger Williams took advantage of a service error, before taking the set point, winning 29-27.
In the final set, JWU opened up with a 5-4 lead, but Roger Williams responded by scoring six straight points, taking a commanding five point lead. The Wildcats shrunk the deficit to as little as three but were unable to overcome the early hole, falling in the fourth.
Roger Williams (3-0, 0-0 CNE) will continue their season on Friday, Sept. 6 at 5:00 pm when they face UMass-Boston in their opening match of the UMass-Boston Invitational. The Hawks will then face off against Trinity (Conn.) and Bridgewater State on Saturday, Sept. 7 to close out the Invitational.
