WALTHAM, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team defeated Westfield State in their first Saturday's Brandeis Invitational matchup, 3-0 (26-24, 25-14, 23-25, 25-19).
The Hawks had 68 points to the Owls 47, while both teams played even with 41 kills apiece. Roger Williams took advantage of their service opportunities, picking up 20 service aces on the day, with the Hawks leading 39-35 in assists. Westfield State registered 52 digs to the Hawks 37.
The Hawks were led offensively by
Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) and
Brianna Pichietti (Batavia, Ill.) each had nine kills in the match while
Emma Bosco had 18 assists, with
Ava Mattiucci (North Kingston, R.I.) adding 16 assists to go with 12 service aces, registering a double-double.
Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) had 11 digs with Bosco recording seven in the match.
Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and
Angela West (Riverview, Fla.) were each in on five blocks, with
Jillian Smith adding seven kills and two blocks. Felix and
Lily Winsten (Rockledge, Fla.) each hit .429 in the match.
For Westfield State, Sydney Cummins had 14 kills with Emma Nihill earning 13 kills. Erica Majka had a pair of service aces, while Julia Dangel-Garcia had 17 assists in the match. Chloe Schuld had 15 digs, with Dangel-Garcia recording a double-double with 10 digs.
With the Owls leading the opening set, 12-11, Roger Williams went on a 7-1 run to take an 18-13 lead. The Owls cut the deficit to two with an 18-16 lead. The Owls retook the lead, 24-23, after scoring three straight points, with the Hawks closing out with three straight points.
The Hawks jumped out to an eight-goal lead in the second set. Shortly after they held an 18-11 lead, before rattling off three straight goals and taking a 21-11 advantage. The Hawks would not lose their lead in the set, taking a 2-0 match lead.
In the third set, Westfield State took a 14-6 advantage, leading by as many as 10. With the Owls holding a 24-15 lead, the Hawks scored eight straight points, cutting the deficit to one, but Westfield State scored off a kill by Cummins to close out the set with a win.
In the fourth set, the Hawks led 22-12 before the Owls then went on a 6-1 run, before the Hawks closed out the set taking two of the next three points.
Roger Williams (6-3, 0-0 CNE) will face Bowdoin in their final match of the Brandeis Invitational on Saturday.
