Women’s Volleyball: Roger Williams Closes Out Brandeis Invite with Loss to Bowdoin

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team closed out their time at the Brandeis Invitational with a loss to Bowdoin, 3-0 (25-16, 29-27, 29-27) on Saturday.
 
The Hawks were outscored 60-45 in the match, forcing the second and third set to extra points. Bowdoin had 45 kills in the match to the Hawks 33, with nine points coming off service aces. The Hawks had 45 digs with five blocks on the match.
 
Skye LaMendola lead the Polar Bears with 15 kills in the match, while Shelly Cameron had a double-double with 32 assists and 12 digs on the match.
 
Roger Williams had two players with double-digit kills as Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) each recording 10 in the match. Ava Mattiucci (North Kingston, R.I.) led the team with 17 assists on the match, while Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) had 12 digs, Jackson had nine in the match falling just shy of a double-double.
 
In the opening set, the Polar Bears had an 11-4 lead but the Hawks scored three straight to cut the deficit to four.  The Hawks trailed by three, 14-11, after a kill by Jillian Smith (New Milford, Conn.) but the Polar Bears scored five straight in response to push the Roger Williams deficit to five. The Hawks would score once more before a run of three points gave Bowdoin a commanding 10-point lead in the set, on their way to the win.
 
In the second set, Bowdoin led 22-17, but the Hawks used a large rally beginning with a miscure from Bowdoin, to score seven straight points, giving the Hawks a 24-22 lead. The Polar Bears responded by earning a pair of points before the Hawks took a 25-24 advantage. Bowdoin then added two points to regain the lead at 26-25, but a pair of kills by Jackson and Mattiucci allowed the Hawks to retake the lead 27-26. Bowdoin then took the set scoring three straight points to close it out.
 
The third set went in a similar fashion, as the Hawks took a 27-26 lead after a pair of points. Bowdoin then used a trio of points to close out the set.
 
Roger Williams (6-4, 0-0 CNE) will host Salve Regina on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 6:00 pm before hosting Coast Guard on Friday, Sept. 20 at 6:00 pm. UMass Dartmouth and Framingham State will then come to Bristol for a tri-match on Saturday, Sept. 21.
