Women’s Volleyball: Hawks Fall to In-State Rival Salve Regina

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team dropped their non-conference matchup against in-state rival Salve Regina on Tuesday evening, falling to the Seahawks, 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-17).
 
The Seahawks had 46 points in the match to the Hawks' 32, while also earning 12 more kills than the Hawks with 34. Both teams were level in aces, but the defense of Salve Regina led in both blocks and digs.
 
For the Seahawks, Lauren Shurling had 11 kills on the day to go with four blocks, and a pair of digs, while Lucy Swanson had eight kills with 11 digs. Siena DeCicco had 28 assists in the match.
 
Roger Williams turned to Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.), Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.), and Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) who had five, four, and four kills respectively. Jackson also led the team in aces and was tied for the team lead in blocks with Kaydence Fish (Bedford, N.H.) with two. Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) had 10 assists in the match, with Emma Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) recording seven on the match. Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) had 19 digs to lead the team.
 
Both teams played to a 13-13 tie, but Salve Regina then scored seven of their next eight points, taking a commanding six point lead. Roger Williams cut the lead to three, but the Seahawks responded with three straight points of their own, before trading points to the end of the set securing the victory.
 
With Roger Williams trailing 17-15, the Hawks scored on a pair of errors by the Seahawks. Salve Regina responded with six points of their own, taking a 23-17 advantage. The Hawks added three more points, but were unable to catch up to Salve Regina, falling behind by two in the match score.
 
The Hawks opened up the third set, taking a 4-0 lead. The Hawks eventually led 7-2, before the Seahawks scored four straight points to cut the deficit to one. Roger Williams led, 9-8, but the Seahawks again found a string of four straight points. The Seahawks led, 14-13, but again to advantage of miscues by the Hawks' going on a five points run to take control of the set for good.
 
Roger Williams (6-5, 0-0 CNE) will host Coast Guard on Friday, Sept. 20 at 6:00 pm, before the Hawks host UMass Dartmouth and Framingham State for a tri-match on Saturday, Sept. 21.
