Women's Soccer: Hawks' Defeat UMass Boston in a Tough Monday Night Battle

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's soccer team defeated UMass Boston on Monday night in a tough matchup, 1-0, at home on Bayside Field.

Roger Williams had 10 shots within the game, half of which were placed on goal while UMass Boston had only five shots on goal, two of which were placed on net. Defensively, the Hawks' Coco Marrelli (Fairfield, Conn.) maintained a clean sheet, having to make only two saves within the matchup. For the Beacons, O'Connell made four saves and allowed one goal.

In the first half of the matchup, the Hawks came out strong, launching a total of five shots at the Beacon's goal, four of which landed on target. Senior captain, Sarah Baptista (Smithfield, R.I.) placed both of her shots for the game on goal, prompting saves from the Beacon's goalkeeper, Isabella O'Connell. Baptista led the Hawks in shots on goal for the night and tied with Julia Robbins (Johnston, R.I.) and Sabrina Sherman (Brentwood, N.H.) for the most shots throughout the game.

The Hawks started the second half with a quick corner, having eight total within the matchup. The teams battled back and forth over freekicks for some time before the Hawks' Mya D'Antonio (Marshfield, Mass.) got the ball at half field and dribbled her way into the Beacon's half, where she cranked a shot from 40 yards out which dipped just over the keeper's head and giving the Hawks the only goal of the matchup.

The Roger Williams University women's soccer team will have their first CNE game of the 2024 season against Western New England on the road on Saturday, Sept 21st at 12:00PM before they return home to host a non-conference matchup against Bridgewater State on Wednesday, Sept 25th at 4:00PM.
