Women’s Volleyball: Coast Guard Stops Hawks in Weekend Primer

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team fell to the Bears of Coast Guard Academy in their first match of the weekend on Friday evening, 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-18), in non-conference play in the Campus Rec Center.
 
Coast Guard led with 39 kills in the match while picking up 37 assists on the offensive end. The Hawks had 32 kills in the match, with 29 being assisted. Roger Williams led with five aces, while Coast Guard had three. On the defensive end, Coast Guard led with eight blocks and 72 digs in the match, while Roger Williams had four and 69.
 
 
Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) had a double-double with 25 assists and 16 digs, while also recording a pair of blocks. Lily Winsten (Rockledge, Fla.) had a pair of blocks in the match, while Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) both had eight kills. Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) registered 20 digs in the match to lead the team.
 
Coast Guard had three players with double-digit kills, while Shannon Shaw led the way with 14. Allie Wildsmith and Amelia Matson each had 10 kills in the match. Wildsmith and Sophia Rosenburg both had four blocks in the match, with Sophia Rosenburg registering 33 assists. Kaela France had 23 digs in the match, with Rosenburg and Laila Baameur each having 10.
 
After the Hawks jumped out to a 9-3 lead, they expanded the Bear deficit to seven, but Coast Guard rallied back to knot the match up at 12-12, scoring seven straight points. The opening set was tight up until, a service error, sparked a three-point run to put the Bears a point away from a set victory. After a pair of points going in favor of Roger Williams, Coast Guard closed it out, taking a 25-22 win.
 
The second set saw the Bears lead 10-4, but a Roger Williams 7-1 run would knot the set at 11-11. Coast Guard saw five straight points, taking a lead that they would not relinquish. The set would tighten up again with Coast Guard leading 24-19, with the Hawks tallying three points, cutting the deficit to two. Coast Guard would then close it out with a kill by Shaw.
 
With the score 11-9 in favor of the Bears in the third set, Coast Guard rattled off eight straight points. The Hawks would pull within five points, but Coast Guard would end the match scoring the final two points with kills by Shaw.
 
Roger Williams (6-6, 0-0 CNE) will host UMass Dartmouth and Framingham State on Saturday, Sept. 21 in the Campus Rec Center for a tri-match beginning at 11:00 am.
