Women’s Volleyball: Hawks Drop Saturday Opener to Corsairs

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team fell in straight-sets to UMass Dartmouth on Saturday morning, falling 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 26-24) in the Roger Williams University Campus Rec Center.
 
The Corsairs tallied 45 kills in the match to the Hawks 31, with three aces and Roger Williams recorded a pair of aces. The Hawks had eight blocks in the match, while the Corsairs only registered six in the match. The Corsairs also recorded five more digs than the Hawks with 63. UMass Dartmouth hit .228 as a team, while holding the Hawks to a .080 hitting percentage.
 
Olivia Seutter led the way for UMass Dartmouth with 15 kills, and Kate Wade had 12 in the match. Maddie Carter had four blocks, with Chelsea Sanker and Seuter each chipping in two a piece. Skye Peters had 21 assists in the match, with Sabrina Bordone also recording 18 assists. Emily Pogorelec had 20 digs with Allison Pate recording 16.
 
Roger Williams was led by Angela West (Riverview, Fla.) who recorded 11 kills in the match. Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) registed an ace in the match, while also earning 27 assists. West led the team on the defensive end with five blocks, while Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) had eight kills with four blocks in the match. Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) led the digs column for Roger Williams with 16, while Izzy Unsworth (Milford, N.H.) chipped in 11.
 
In the opening set, the Corsairs jumped out to an 11-6 lead, but Roger Williams pulled within two after scoring three straight points, capped by a kill by Picchietti. UMass Dartmouth led 15-11 but the Corsairs rattled off six points to take control of the set.
 
Roger Williams led 16-14, after scoring three straight points, but the Corsairs responded by retaking the lead, scoring four straight with a pair of kills by Sanker.  The Corsairs would hold the Hawks to two points the rest of the way, while taking the set 25-18.
 
Trailing 21-16, the Hawks then rattled off four straight points to pull within one in the set. After an error by the Hawks put the Corsairs up two, kills by Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and West leveled the match at 22-22. The score would remain knotted until 24-24, but Seutter would earn a kill before an attack the Hawks fell just out of bounds, ending the match.
 
Roger Williams (6-7, 0-0 CNE) will continue play Saturday afternoon against Framingham State with a scheduled 3:00 pm start.
