Women’s Volleyball: Hawks Defeat Umass Boston in Tourney Opener

Boston, Mass – In non-conference action, the Roger Williams women's volleyball team defeated Umass Boston 3-1, (17-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-14, 15-10).
 
The Hawks began the match by dropping the first set 17-25, but quickly bounced back with a 25-21 win. Umass answered, flipping the score 25-21 in their favor. Roger Williams responded with two straight wins, securing the victory, 3-2.
 
Individually, Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I) and Emma Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) led the way with 22 assists a piece. Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) and Peyton Felix (Burnt Hill, N.Y.) did the heavy lifting in the kill department, recording 10 each, followed by Angela West's (Riverview, Fla.) nine. Emma Bosco also led the squad with 20 digs, followed by Ava Mattiucci and Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) who logged 17 of their own.
 
For Umass Boston, Dylan Wertzberger recorded a team-high 14 kills to go along with 19 digs. Mary Matthews led the way with 24 digs, and Audrey Cofield chipped in a team high 22 assists.
 
After splitting the first four sets, the Hawks were able to escape with a victory outscoring Umass Boston 15-10 in the final set. In total, Roger Williams recorded 69 points to Umass's 63, and also out tallied Umass in the kill, blocks, assists, and dig departments.
 
Roger Williams (4-0, 0-0 CNE) will look to carry their early season momentum into their double header tomorrow against Trinity College and Bridgewater State University that will begin at 2:00 PM at the Clark Athletic Center in Boston, Mass.
