Women's Soccer: Hawks Face First Defeat of the 2024 Season Against WPI

WORCESTER, MASS. – The Roger Williams University women's soccer team succumbed to WPI, 4-1, on Saturday at H. Carr Field.

The Hawks took nine shots throughout the game, placing just five on target, while WPI had double the number of shots at 18 for the game, 12 of which were placed on goal. The Hawks led the game in corner kicks, having four whilst WPI only had two throughout the duration of the match.

The Hawks had a difficult start in the first half of the matchup, allowing a goal within the first two minutes of the game by WPI's Rian Fadden. Although able to get shots off, the Hawks were unable to put any in the back of the net. At the start of the second half, WPI continued to apply pressure, attacking at every opportunity and putting shots on goal against the Hawks, and putting away another goal in the 58th minute. After some back and forth between the two teams and many shots from each, WPI capitalized on yet another opportunity in the 82th minute, bringing in a third goal for the Engineers.

Just over a minute later, the Hawks Simone Cassano (Schenectady, N.Y.) placed a header goal in the back right off a corner by Mya D'Antonio (Marshfield, Mass.) and putting the Hawks on the scoreboard. A few moments later, off of a free kick, WPI's Julia Kerman found the back of the Hawk's net, bringing the score to 4-1 to the Engineers.

Roger Williams (3-1-0, 0-0-0 CNE) will host Wheaton at home on Bayside Field on Monday, Sept. 9 at 4:00 pm, before playing UMass Dartmouth on the road Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 5:30 pm.
