BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team defeated Trinity, 37-10, and fell to WPI, 28-18, on Saturday in the Campus Rec Center Field House, as the Hawks hosted a Quad Meet.
Against the Bantams, the Hawks dropped their opening match, 8-0, with Alexander Schaeublin defeating
Chris Tringali, the Hawks picked up six points to take the lead, when
Shaun McLaughlin pinned Matthew Carrozza in 4:28. After falling behind 7-6 after the 141 pound match, Roger Williams earned another pin, with
Nick Fatone earning an opening period win.
The Hawks dropped another three points, at 157 pounds, but
Matt Lucas started a run of five straight wins for the Hawks, winning by fall in 6:35.
Jayden Curley followed suit by earning a win via pin in 4:06.
Michael Forte and
Spencer Fetrow each earned wins by tech fall, with Fetrow earning his in 2:37.
Jayden Toppan rounded out the match with a 4-2 victory by decision.
In their matchup against WPI, Tanner Thatcher opened the match for the Engineers with a win by pin in 4:26, ahead of a win by McLaughlin in a 6-5 decision over Charlie Pavis. Another pin by WPI put the Engineers up 12-3, and the Engineers followed with a major decision victory.
The Hawks grabbed six points, with a win by
Gordon Murray and Lucas at 157 pounds and 165 pounds respectively. Joe Tully won the match by pin, putting the Engineers up, 22-9.
Michael Forte picked up four points with a 14-2 win in his match, but Nicolas LeSieur clinched the match with a pin of Fetrow.
Jayden Toppan finished the match with a 16-1 win by tech fall.
Roger Williams (11-4, 4-3 NEWA) will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 10:00 am when they take part in the Wildcat Open. The Hawks will then compete at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Championships on Sunday, Jan. 26.
