SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team fell to New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) rival Western New England, 28-21, on Friday evening in the Anthony S. Caprio Alumni Healthful Living Center.
Opening the match at 125 pounds, Beniamino DiCocco defeated
Dan Hickey by fall to earn six points to open the match for the Golden Bears.
Trey Kaupp added six points for the Hawks by pinning his opponent in 1:55, leveling the match score at 6-6.
WNE took command in the match with a win at 141 pounds, when Austin Monteiro downed his opponent 5-0, before James Linder earned another five points with a 23-8 win by tech fall.
Matt Lucas added three points for RWU with a 7-4 win, but a win at 165 pounds and 174 pounds, put WNE up 24-9.
Eric Power picked up six points with a pin in 1:23 at 184 pounds, but a win by Aidan DeLuca sealed the match for the Golden Bears, before
Jayden Toppan earned six points with a win by fall in 2:33.
Roger Williams (13-7, 6-6 NEWA) will host Maine Maritime, Plymouth State, and Bridgewater State for a Quad Meet on Saturday, Feb. 1 beginning at 10:00 am. The Hawks will then host Rhode Island College for their final home dual of the season, before traveling to take on #3/#4 Johnson & Wales.
