BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team fell to Hartford on Homecoming and Family Weekend Saturday, 3-1, as RWU suffered their first loss in Conference of New England (CNE) play.
Roger Williams was out shot 20-18 by Hartford with the Connecticut version of the Hawks tallying 11 shots on target to RWU's eight. Fouls were called in favor of Roger Williams 4-3, with two more corner kick opportunities.
Coco Marrelli (Fairfield, Conn.) had eight saves in the match, with Sejal Johnson making seven saves in the game for UHart.
Hartford opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, with Rebecca Opdenbrouw sending a corner kick into the box, connecting with Sophia Coer who sent a quick pass to Reese Sadler for the goal.
Coming out of the half trailing by 1, RWU scored their first goal of the match with Beth Yucius (Duxbury, Mass.) sending a cross over to Julia Robbins (Johnston, R.I.) at the top of the six yard box and sent it into the bottom right corner of the net.
In the 60th minute, Coer found Opdenbrouw on a cross, that Opdenbrouw buried into the back of the net. Hartford finished the contest with a second goal by Opdenbrouw, putting Hartford's lead at two.
Hartford (9-3-2, 4-3 CNE) will host Nichols on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 4:00 pm ahead of a Saturday, Oct. 25, matchup at Wentworth.
Roger Williams (9-2-4, 4-1-2 CNE) will host Gordon on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 4:00 pm, before playing at Nichols on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 3:00 pm. The Hawks will then host Wentworth on Tuesday, Oct. 28 to round out the regular season.
