BRISTOL, R.I. – In a non-conference matchup on Bayside Field on Wednesday afternoon, the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team took a 3-1 victory over Worcester State University.
The Hawks out shot the Lancers 16-10, with both teams putting seven shot on target in the match. Coco Marrelli (Fairfield, Conn.) made six saves in the contest, while Worcester State's Ella Gumienny made four saves. The Hawks tallied eight corner kicks with the Lancers unable to register one. The Hawks also committed 16 fouls in the match to the Lancers seven.
The Hawks struck first, after putting two shots on target to open the contest, out of their six prior attempts, Camryn Dickinson (Quaker Hill, Conn.) fired a shot into the back of the net as Chloe Watson (Bethlehem, Pa.) sent a pass through the box, that Dickinson, who was crashing on the far post, then buried into the net, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead with 1:59 remaining in the half.
With 21:56 remaining in the second half Dickinson sent a ball across the post, finding Sinead Deegan (Bethel, Conn.) on the far post, burying it on the high right corner of the net. A few minutes later, Dickinson cut back inside, firing a high arching shot from outside of the 18-yard box, into the top right corner of the net.
The Lancers then responded with Sophie Farr, putting a shot into the upper right corner of the net, after the shot was blocked in front by a RWU defender, taking a bounce off the left post and into the back right corner off the ricochet.
With the win Marrelli moves to 8-1-3 on the season, while Gumienny drops to 6-4-1 on the year.
Worcester State (7-4-1, 5-0-0 MASCAC) will host Westfield State on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 4:00 pm for their Pink Out Game ahead of hosting Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7:00 pm.
Roger Williams (8-1-3, 3-0-1 CNE) will host Suffolk on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 3:00 pm for Senior Day, ahead of taking on Curry on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7:00 pm in Milton, Mass. The Hawks will then round out the week with a match on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 12:00 pm against Hartford for Homecoming and Family Weekend.
