BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team was able to charge back from an early two-set deficit on Saturday afternoon to defeat the University of New England, 3-2 (23-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-18, 15-12), on Senior Day.
The Hawks as a team hit .255 while UNE tallied a .131 hitting percentage, the Hawks had only five service aces to the Nor'easters with 10, but did win the battle at the net with 11 blocks to UNE's four.
Hannah Nowell tallied 19 total kills with Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Angela West (Riverview, Fla.) each earning 15 to lead the Hawks offense. Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) tallied 14 kills in the win. Emma Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) had 51 assists. Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and West each had six total blocks, with Felix recording six blocks while West had a solo block and five block assists. Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) led the defense with 17 digs in the match.
After trailing 19-12, the Hawks battled to within one with an attack error on Kenzie Cleary, putting the set score at 24-23. The Nor'easters then finished the set with a kill by Nowell. In the second the Nor'easters stormed after trailing 23-22, scoring three straight points to take the set win, and lead 2-0.
In the third frame, the Hawks responded, trailing 19-17 with eight of the next nine points to take the win. In the fourth set, the Hawks controlled the pace of play and took a 25-18 win to force a fifth set.
Battling back and forth early in the fifth set, the Hawks trailed 10-8 before tallying five straight points to take a 13-10 lead they would not relinquish.
The Hawks celebrated their seven seniors - Izzy Unsworth (Milford, N.H.), Emma Bosco, Jillian Smith (New Milford, Conn.), Kaylee Jackson, Lily Winsten (and Ducky!) (Rockledge, Fla.), Brianna Picchietti, and Samantha Johnson (Richmond, Va.) - prior to the match!
Roger Williams (12-10, 7-1 CNE) will close out the regular season next week with a road contest at Hartford on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 7:00 pm ahead of their regular season finale against Western New England on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 1:00 pm in the Campus Rec Center.
