Women's Basketball: #12 Bates Out Duels Roger Williams in First Game of WPI Classic

WORCESTER, Mass. — The Roger Williams University women's basketball team was unable to overcome a slow start, falling 65–44 to Bates College on Monday night at Harrington Auditorium.

Bates opened the game with strong offensive execution, building a 22–12 lead after the first quarter before tightening defensively in the second. The Bobcats limited Roger Williams to four points in the period, extending the advantage to 35–16 at halftime. The Hawks responded after the break, outscoring Bates 17–16 in the third quarter behind improved ball movement and perimeter shooting, but Bates maintained control and closed the game by outscoring Roger Williams 14–11 in the fourth quarter.

Roger Williams finished the night shooting 34.0 percent from the field, including 28.6 percent from three-point range, and totaled 38 rebounds with 11 assists. The Hawks were limited to three points off turnovers and committed 23 turnovers on the night. Bates shot 43.8 percent from the floor and controlled the interior, holding a 42–24 advantage in points in the paint while scoring 18 points off turnovers and receiving 29 points from its bench.

Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) paced Roger Williams with 14 points and seven rebounds, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor. Lilli Clark (Willimantic, Conn.) added eight points, while Chloe Richardson (Norwell, Mass.) contributed seven points, five rebounds, and two steals. Maia Riccio (Cranston, R.I.) chipped in five points and five rebounds off the bench as the Hawks moved to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in CNE play.

Bates was led by Elsa Daulerio, who scored a game-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds, three steals, and three blocks. Claire Gaetani added 14 points and four assists, while Gabby Bellacqua finished with seven points as the Bobcats improved to 9-1 on the season.

Roger Williams (5-5, 2-1 CNE) will take on hosts WPI on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 3:00 pm ahead of hosting Wentworth to open their 2026 slate on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 1:00 pm.
