WORCESTER, Mass. — Ava Giansiracusa and Ava Hyams each scored 10 points as WPI held off Roger Williams University, 52-47, in a women's basketball nonconference game Tuesday afternoon at Harrington Auditorium.
Roger Williams University Hawks (5-6, 2-1 CNE) and WPI Engineers (7-4, 0-0 NEWMAC) were tied 13-13 after the first quarter, but WPI used a 10-6 edge in the second period to take a 23-19 lead into halftime. Roger Williams answered with a strong third quarter, outscoring the Engineers 19-17 to pull within two, 40-38, before WPI closed the game by holding the Hawks to nine points in the final period.
The Hawks were led by Ava Azzaro, who finished with a team-high 10 points off the bench. Lilli Clark added eight points and a team-best eight rebounds, while Chelsea Graiver chipped in seven points and four boards. Roger Williams shot 31.4 percent from the field (16 of 51) and went 13 of 21 from the free-throw line.
WPI shot 36.8 percent (21 of 57) and held a 41-34 advantage on the glass. In addition to Giansiracusa and Hyams, Allison Fullem provided a spark off the bench with 10 points, and Emmy Allyn contributed nine points. The Engineers also scored 17 second-chance points, helping them maintain the lead down the stretch.
In addition Sophia Coppola was named to the All-Tournament team for her performance over the past two games.
Roger Williams (5-6, 2-1 CNE) will host Wentworth on Saturday, Jan. 3 to bring in the New Year.
