BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team went into the break with a five-point lead, but outscored the Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology, 41-10 in the second half to take a 62-26 victory.
The Hawks shot 0.472 from the floor in the second half, while holding the leopards to 0.220 percent from the floor. The Hawks only knocked down one shot from beyond the arc, while making 9-of-12 shots from the free throw line. The Hawks also won the battle on the glass 42-35. The Hawks also had 38 points in the paint to six points by Wentworth.
Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) and
Ava Azzaro (Northampton, Mass.) each tallied 12 points in the matchup, while Coppola had five blocks with six rebounds.
Sakoya Sweeney (Craftsbury, Vt.) knocked down a three, tallying eight points off the bench, while also having five rebounds.
Lilli Clark (Willimantic, Conn.) had six rebounds in the win, while
Chelsea Graiver (North Yarmouth, Maine) and
Cara Murphy (Springfield, Mass.) each tallied four assists in the game, with Graiver picking up three steals.
Mia Luna Zayas had 10 points with three rebounds, while Elise Ayer had nine points with six rebounds, while Taylor Garabedian had five points with six rebounds.
The first quarter saw a total of seven total lead changes in the quarter, as the Hawks were able to end the frame on a 7-0 run to take the lead, 15-10 at the end of the first, the two teams then battled it out to a 21-16 halftime score with both teams tallying six points apiece.
In the third, the Hawks offense came to live as they went on to outscore the Leopards, 20-7 in the third quarter. The Hawks would keep the momentum rolling into the fourth, as they shut down the Wentworth offense, allowing only three points in the final 10 minutes of action.
Wentworth (1-11, 0-4 CNE) will travel to Nichols on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 5:00 pm before hosting Gordon and Johnson & Wales on Saturday, Jan. 10 and Wednesday, Jan. 14 respectively.
Roger Williams (6-6, 3-1 CNE) will face Curry on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 5:30 pm in Milton, ahead of a Saturday, Jan. 10 matchup at 1:00 pm in the Campus Rec Center against Nichols. The Hawks will then travel to face Suffolk on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 5:30 pm in Boston.
