BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams women's basketball team defeated Hartford University 61-49 in their Conference of New England matchup that took place at the Campus Rec Center Gymnasium in Bristol, RI on Tuesday evening.
In the matchup, Hartford was able to jump out to a fast start, taking command 7-2 to open up the first four minutes of the game. Roger Williams responded with a 7-0 run of their own shortly after. The Hawks would close the frame on a 13-4 run, holding a 15-11 lead at the end of the first frame. Roger Williams would force the opponent into seven turnovers in the first. In the second quarter, Roger Williams would expand their lead up to seven before halftime, due in part to 7-10 free throw shooting in the quarter, while Hartford would make just 1 of 2 attempts. Roger Williams would carry a 29-22 lead into the locker room.
In the third frame, Roger Williams was able to control the lead for the entirety of the quarter. Hartford was able to cut their deficit as low as five with six minutes to play, however the Hawks responded with a 9-2 that expanded their lead to 12 with a minute to play. They would end the quarter holding a 44-34 lead. Similar to third, Roger Williams would continue to hold their lead for remainder of the game. Hartford was once again able to pull within five with 2:30 to play, but the Hawks would pull away for the last time, securing the 12-point victory.
In the win, the Hawks were led by
Elizabeth Dufrane (Falls Church, Va.) and
Chloe Richardson (Norwell, Mass.), who totaled 16 points each. Both Dufrane and Richardson would record four steals a piece, with Dufrane adding two blocks as well. For the opponent, Ava Naszimento led the way with 14 points.
With the win, Roger Williams moves to 15-7 overall and 12-3 in Conference of New England action. They will remain in third place in the CNE standings, looking up at Endicott and Western New England who remain in second and first place respectfully. They will remain at home for Saturday's Senior Day tilt vs Gordon College that will take place at 1:00 PM.
