BRISTOL, R.I – The Roger Williams men's basketball team fell the Western New England 78-56 on Wednesday evening, moving their record to 8-5 in the Conference of New England and 13-7 overall. Western New England will remain atop the CNE standings following the victory, sitting at 11-2.
The Golden Bears shot 52.5% from the field in the victory, with the Hawks coming in at 34%. In the paint the opponent scored 54 of their 78 points, compared to Roger Williams 28.
To begin the game, the Hawks were able to jump out to a 16-6 lead, before a Western New England (WNE) run saw them march back to tie things up at 16. A
Will MacDonald (York, Me.) three pointer would end the WNE run, before a Jake Harrison and one layup would knot things back up at 19-19. The Golden Bears would eventually take control of the lead at the 11-minute mark and hold that lead into the half time locker room. Two
Ryan Higgins' (Boston, Mass.) free throws to cut the Hawk deficit to just two at the break.
In the first frame the Hawks were led by
Finn Miller's (Stamford, Conn.) 11 points on 5/6 shooting, while the Golden Bears were led by Jake Harrison's 14 points on 6/7 shooting. Cody Palazzesi added 11 of his own shooting 4/5 from the field and ¾ from three.
The Hawks would open the second frame with a Phillip Sughrue (Belmont, Mass.) layup to even things up at 36, before a 18-2 run by WNE would put the opponent ahead by 16, seven minutes into the half. They would never look back from there, holding onto a double-digit lead until the 8:20 mark, when a
Ty Higgins (New Marlborough, Mass.) three pointer would cut the Hawks deficit to eight. WNE would then open things up to 20 points with just five minutes to play, coasting to a 78-56 victory.
Individually, the Hawks would have just one player in double figures in
Finn Miller, who finished with 11 points in the loss.
Ryan Hammarlund (Southington, Conn.) would chip in five steals as well. For the Golden Bears, Jake Harrison led the way with 22 points on 10/12 shooting from the floor. Harrison grabbed 16 boards and dished out five assists as well. Tim Restall added 15 points, five rebounds, and four assists in the victory as well.
Roger Williams will travel to Curry College on Saturday afternoon, where they will look to improve on their 8-5 mark. Following Curry, they will head back home to take on Hartford on Tuesday evening on Feb. 11.
