BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's lacrosse team fell to 13th-ranked Babson College, 15-6, on Tuesday afternoon at Bayside Field in non-conference action.
Babson held a 37-20 shot advantage, while the Beavers also forced 21 turnovers while committing 12. Roger Williams excelled in draw controls, winning 16 to Babson's nine, but the visitors on two of seven attempts.
#13 Babson (2-1) was led by Clare Connolly and Michaela Downer, who each netted four goals. Kathryn Blake contributed three goals and two assists, while Ellie Hilsabeck tallied a team-high three assists to go with her one goal. In net, Kathleen Murphy made six saves in the victory.
Roger Williams was paced by Allie Shamberger's two-goal, one-assist performance. Mia Pantano, Margo Tenney, Miranda Hayes, and Emma Terino each added a goal, while Kimmy Creegan distributed three assists. Goalkeeper Zoey Cormican recorded 10 saves in the loss. Defensively, Jamie Anthony and Josie Poulin led the Hawks with a combined three caused turnovers, while Anthony scooped up a team-high five ground balls. Hayes led Roger Williams with eight controls, while Kimmy Creegan added six, showcasing dominance at the circle.
Babson struck first when Hilsabeck capitalized on a free-position shot at the 11:38 mark of the first quarter, but Roger Williams quickly responded with Pantano's goal off a feed from Terino. However, Babson went on a three-goal run with unassisted tallies from Downer and Novitch, and a connection between Connolly and Hilsabeck, giving the Beavers a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.
The Hawks fought back in the second quarter, with Tenney's goal from Creegan at 14:18, followed by Terino finishing off a pass from Shamberger with 12:55 remaining in the half, cutting the deficit to 4-3. Babson, however, reestablished control with goals from Downer and Novitch, taking a 6-3 advantage into halftime.
The teams traded goals in the third quarter. Blake's unassisted strike at 11:59 put Babson up 7-3 before Jessica Evans scored with the player advantage to extend the lead to five. Shamberger answered with a goal assisted by Hayes, and after another Blake score, Hayes found the net on a feed from Creegan to bring the Hawks within five heading into the final frame.
Babson closed the game with a dominant fourth quarter, outscoring Roger Williams 5-1. Downer, Connolly, and Blake each added to their goal totals, and Connolly capped the scoring at 2:52 with a goal assisted by Blake. Shamberger netted a late man-up goal for the Hawks, but the Beavers' lead proved insurmountable.
Roger Williams (2-5, 0-0 CNE) will begin Conference of New England (CNE) action as they host Hartford on Wednesday, Mar. 26 at 4:00 pm. The Hawks will then play two games on the road at Curryon on Saturday, Mar. 29 and Tuesday, Apr. 1 at Gordon.
