Women's Lacrosse: Hawks Down #21 Engineers for first win of the Season

BRISTOL, R.I – The Roger Williams women's lacrosse team defeated No. 21 MIT 13-11 on Bayside Field in Bristol, R.I. for their first win of the season.
 
In the win, Roger Williams converted 17/18 clearance attempts while MIT converted 18/20 clearance attempts. Roger Williams caused 13 turnovers to the opponent's six. Roger Williams also led the turnover battle 22-20.
 
The Hawks were led by Emma Terino's four goals as well as Allie Shamberger's four points (three goals, one assist). Kimmy Creegan added two goals and an assist in the victory as well. For the Engineers, Annica Lam and Julianne Flusche led the way, dropping in four goals each in the defeat. Gwen Flusche chipped in two assists for MIT as well.
 
MIT got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 3-0 lead just five minutes into the matchup. The Hawks responded with three unanswered goals of their own to even things up at 3-3 to conclude the first frame.
 
In the second quarter, Allie Shamberger tacked on another goal for RWU pushing them in front 4-3. The next goal would come by Ashley Thomas with just one minute to play in the quarter to even it back up, this time at 4-4. Following an MIT penalty, Mia Pantano would drop in a goal for the Hawks to give them a one-point advantage, however MIT would respond shortly after via an Annica Lam goal. The two teams would head into the half knotted up at 5-5.
 
MIT came out of the half with two straight goals, both of which coming from Annica Lam. MIT would hold their 7-5 lead for the next minutes, before netting another goal via Julianne Flusche. Emma Terino quickly broke the scoring drought for the Hawks, making it 8-6 with two minutes to play in the third frame. With just three seconds remaining in the period, Kimmy Creegan would drop in another for the Hawks, narrowing the deficit to just one to conclude the third quarter.
 
The fourth would be all Roger Williams as they would score four straight unanswered goals to take control of the matchup 11-8 with 11 minutes to play. Annica Lam ended the Hawk run with a goal at the 9:40 mark, her fourth of the game. Margo Tenney would then bring the lead back up to three, two minutes later. MIT would score the next two to make it 12-11, however an Emma Terino goal with 1:30 to play would seal it up for the Hawks, as they would go on to secure the 13-11 victory. Within this match, sophomore Miranda Hayes (South Burlington, Vt.) also acquired her 100th draw control.
 
The Hawks will move to 1-2 following the win, and will take on #7 Colby on Sunday, March 9 in their next battle. Following Colby, the squad will head down to Florida for their spring break trip where they will take on Bowdoin and Westfield State.
