Bristol, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's lacrosse team put forth a strong effort on Saturday afternoon but ultimately fell to #7 Colby College, 11-7, at Bayside Field. Despite an early lead, the Hawks struggled to keep pace with the Mules' offensive firepower in the second half.
The Hawks came out firing, taking a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter behind goals from
Ella Waryas (Foxboro, Mass.),
Emma Terino (East Meadow, N.Y.), and
Miranda Hayes (South Burlington, Vt.). Waryas led the Hawks with four goals, showcasing her ability to create offensive opportunities. Assists from
Kimmy Creegan (Ramsey, N.J.) and
Allie Shamberger (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) helped the Hawks capitalize on its early chances.
The Mules responded in the second quarter, outscoring the Hawks 3-0 in the quarter to take a 5-4 lead going into halftime. The Mules were led by Julia Jardina, who had a dominant performance with five goals and one caused turnover. Charlotte Michener and Ainsley Dion also contributed significantly to the Mules' attack having a part in both scoring goals and providing assists.
The Hawks remained within striking distance throughout the second half, but a decisive four-goal third quarter from the Mules created separation. The Mules' defensive pressure forced key turnovers, limiting the Hawks scoring chances. Goalie Jillian Kane made crucial stops for the Mules, finishing with seven saves. Meanwhile, the Hawks
Zoey Cormican (Rochester, N.H.) had a busy day in net, recording 13 saves to keep her team competitive.
Fouls also played a role in the game's outcome, with the Hawks accumulating 18 minutes in penalties, including a crucial yellow card in the third quarter that allowed Colby to capitalize on an extra-player advantage.
Roger Williams now holds a 1-3 record going into their Spring Break Trip to Panama City, Florida where they will face Bowdoin College on Tuesday, March 11th at 10:00am CST/11:00am EST before playing Westfield State on Thursday, March 13th, at 1:00pm CST/2:00pm EST.
