Men's Tennis: Hawks Overcome Gordon 4-3 in Saturday Matchup

BEVERLY, MASS. — The Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team extended its impressive run with a narrow 4–3 victory over Gordon College on Saturday morning at Bass River. The win moves the Hawks to 15–1 overall and a perfect 6–0 in Conference of New England play.

The Hawks opened the day intense by securing the doubles point. The pairings of Camden Poitras and Will Hurlbut (Marion, Mass.) winning 6-2, and Tucker Taylor with Iker Rodriguez (Nuacalpan de Juarez, Mexico) winning 6-3. Both earned convincing wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions, respectively. In the third doubles matchup, the No. 1 duo of Bronson DeSisto (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Ryan Caroll (Holden, Mass.) fell in a tight 6–8 decision.

In singles action, the Hawks depth once again proved critical. At No. 2, Caroll made quick work of Gordon's Joshua Noel with both 6–1 victories. Taylor followed with a commanding 6–3, 6–0 victory at No. 4, continuing his strong individual campaign.

Johnny Baldyga (Simsbury, Conn.) delivered in straight sets at No. 5, clinching a crucial win 7–5, 6–2 that brought the Hawks within one match of the overall victory.

Gordon battled back, claiming points at the top two spots in the lineup. No. 1 singles saw DeSisto drop a tough match to Jeffrey Bodner (1–6, 3–6), while Poitras was defeated 5–7, 1–6 at No. 3.
In the No. 6 singles, Rodriguez engaged in a three-set thriller with Gordon's Carleton Riester. Rodriguez took the opening set 6–1 but Riester answered 7–6 in the second. The deciding tiebreak was a back-and-forth battle, with Riester narrowly edging Rodriguez 11–9.

Roger Williams Men's Tennis (15-1, 6-0 CNE) will look to keep their momentum rolling as they look to their next matchup against Nichols College on Tuesday, April 15th in Dudley, Mass. The Hawks will then return home to host Curry College on Thursday, April 17th at 4:00pm.
