Women's Lacrosse: Hawks Earn Final Win of Regular Season Against Wentworth

BOSTON, MASS. - The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team turned in another dominant performance on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Wentworth Institute of Technology 24-2 at Sweeney Field.

The Hawks wasted no time establishing control, outscoring the Leopards 9-1 in the opening quarter and holding a commanding 16-1 lead by halftime. RWU out shot Wentworth 40-7 in the game, including 29 shots on goal, while allowing just five on the defensive end.

Senior Mia Pantano (Reading, Mass.) led the Hawks with five goals on nine shots, while sophomore Allie Shamberger (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) had a great day as the offensive facilitator, scoring four goals and dishing out five assists for her teammates. Senior Emma Terino (East Meadow, N.Y.) continued her strong form with three goals and four assists, while senior  Ella Waryas (Foxboro, Mass.) also notched a hat trick and two assists.

The scoring was well-distributed across the roster with junior Lauren Canata (West Springfield, Mass.) earning her first two goals of the season. Sophomore Jamie Anthony (Somers, Conn.), Jaymie Arena (Hopkinton, Mass.), Lily Poletto (East Lyme, Conn.), Grace Rocheleau (West Hartford, Conn.), Marykate MacDougall (Medway, Mass.), Miranda Hayes  (South Burlington, Vt.), and Mikayla Fey (Bethlehem, Pa.) all finding the back of the net. On top of that, eight different Hawks recorded assists.

RWU dominated in all aspects of the game, winning 22 of 29 draw controls and Hayes earned the new record slot for draw controls within a single game. The Hawks also cleared on 13 of 14 attempts. Hayes was especially active with 18 draw controls and an assist ontop of her goal.

Goalkeepers Zoey Cormican (Rochester, N.H.)and Aizza Chase (Cohasset, Mass.) split time in the net, combining for three saves on five shots on goal. Defensively, the Hawks caused eight turnovers and limited Wentworth to just two goals, one in the first quarter and one late in the fourth.

Roger Williams (10-6, 8-1 CNE) completed regular season play with this win over Wentworth and earned the #2 spot in the Conference of New England tournament set to begin with the First Round on Saturday, April 26th. The Hawks will receive a bye for the weekend and with next show in the Semi-Finals matchup on Wednesday, April 30th.
