BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team battled for a win in extra points in the second set, but eventually fell to non-conference foe WPI, 3-1, in Red Auerbach Arena at Brandeis, in their second matchup of the Brandeis Invitational.
WPI took the first set 25-15, before the Hawks edged out the Engineers 26-24 in the second, with their NEWMAC opponents winning the final two sets 25-23, 25-19.
As a team the Engineers tallied 54 kills in the match, while serving five aces, with four blocks, and 49 total assists. WPI also tallied 57 digs in the match. The Hawks had 48 kills in the match while serving nine aces, with 42 assists. Defensively RWU, tallied 58 digs and four blocks.
On the match, WPI tallied a .218 hitting percentage, recording 54 kills with 20 errors and 156 attempts. Roger Williams had 48 kills with 27 errors on 154 total attempts.
Individually, the Engineers were paced by Anastasia Kelnik and Olivia Hutchinson, who each had 13 kills, while Bridget Spees had 10 kills. Hutchinson hit .500 for the match, while also earning three digs and two block assists, while Spees added eight digs in the matchup. Lauren Boycourt had 22 assists in the matchup to pair with six digs and a kill, while Preslie Jerebker had 20 assists and two digs. Defensively, Alana Harris was responsible for 19 digs total in the match.
For the Hawks,
Ava McGonagle (Reading, Mass.)
had 29 assists, with only two errors, a pair of service aces, and four digs, while
Izzy Unsworth (Milford, N.H.) had 19 kills on 53 attempts, earning 16 digs in the process, setting a personal best for kills in a game.
Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) also had 12 kills with seven digs, while
Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) had
a solo block as well as a block assist with nine kills.
Angela West (Riverview, Fla.)
hit 308 with six kills and two errors on 13 attempts.
WPI dominated in the opening set, jumping out to an 18-9 lead after an error by Unsworth. The Hawks were able to cut the deficit down to five, 21-16, but four straight points for the Engineers ended the set.
In the second set, the Hawks trailed 16-11 but were able to crawl back within one after a kill by Felix sparked a five-point run. Down 24-21, the Hawks rattled off five straight points again to overtake the Engineers in extra points.
The Engineers were able to fend off the Hawks in the final two sets, securing the win.
Roger Williams (0-2, 0-0 CNE) will take on MIT in a 3:00 pm matchup to round out the Brandeis Invitational on Saturday.
