NORTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team picked up its first win of the campaign on Wednesday afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts on the campus of Wheaton College, defeating the Lyons 4-3 in non-conference action, in a four-hour marathon.
In doubles play, the Hawks fell, as Jaime Galligo and Landon Wyshner downed the No. 1 doubles team for the Hawks in Ryan Carroll (Holden, Mass.) and Bronson DeSisto (Las Vegas, Nev.), 6-3. The Hawks leveled the match, taking No. 3 doubles with Steven Mathew (Bayport, N.Y.) and Om Seth (Lincoln, R.I.) earning a 6-3 victory, but the Lyons saw Jake Murray and Calvin Van Dyke earn a 6-3 win to secure doubles for Wheaton.
In singles play, Nathan Belmore (Lakeville, Mass.) leveled the match with a key 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles over David Anghinetti, ahead of a win by Seth with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 5 singles, giving the Hawks a 2-1 match advantage. Wheaton leveled it up at No. 4 singles with Jake Murray defeating Iker Rodriguez Alcocer (Nuacalpan de Juarez, Mexico), 6-4, 6-3.
With the match tied, the Lyons saw Galligo earn a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 win over DeSisto. Down to their last point, Roger Williams saw Carroll pick up a key point with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 victory at the No. 2 singles spot.
With the match knotted up, Camden Poitras (Londonderry, N.H.) fell in the first set 7-5, ahead of winning the second set of his match in a 7-6 tiebreaker, forcing a third set. Poitras then earned a 6-4 victory to close out a win for the Hawks.
Roger Williams will close out their fall season on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 3:00 pm in Newport when they take on Salve Regina.
