NORTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision on the road at Wheaton College Wednesday night, despite a two-goal effort from Mya D'Antonio (Marshfield, Mass.) .
The Lyons struck first in the 11th minute when Kate Wickenheisser converted off an assist from Kaydie O'Neil to give Wheaton the early lead. The Hawks battled back and equalized before halftime as D'Antonio found the back of the net in the 37th minute, notching her third goal of the season to pull the match level at 1-1 .
Wheaton regained momentum immediately after the break. Karina Contreras scored in the 48th minute off a feed from Wickenheisser, before Ali Roche extended the advantage to 3-1 in the 63rd minute .
Roger Williams refused to go quietly. D'Antonio capitalized again late in the match, slotting home her second goal of the day in the 87th minute to cut the deficit to 3-2. Despite a late push and multiple chances, the Hawks could not find the equalizer before the final whistle .
Statistically, RWU held a slight edge in shots (16-15) and put 10 on goal compared to nine for Wheaton. Casey Donnelly (Norwalk, Conn.) led the Hawks with five shots, while Camryn Dickinson (Quaker Hill, Conn.) added three on target. Goalkeeper Coco Marrelli (Fairfield, Conn.) registered six saves in net for the Hawks .
With the result, Roger Williams moves to 3-1-2 overall and 1-0 in Conference of New England (CNE) play, while Wheaton improves to 4-1-0.
The Hawks return to CNE action on Saturday, September 20, when they travel to face Johnson & Wales (2-2-1).
