PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team came away from their Conference of New England (CNE) matchup at Johnson & Wales with a 3-0 win over their in-state rival at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Turf Field, as goalkeeper Coco Marrelli (Fairfield, Conn.) collected her 300th career save.
The Hawks outshot JWU 13-11, putting five shots on target to the Wildcats' two. JWU tallied seven total corner kicks in the match to the Hawks' two, with the Hawks committing one more foul than the Wildcats, 5-4.
Beth Yucius (Duxbury, Mass.) paced the Hawks with three shots on goal, while Camryn Dickinson (Quaker Hill, Conn.) and Sinead Deegan (Bethel, Conn.) each had a shot on target. The Wildcats saw Sophia Warburton take four total shots, while only one landed on target. Jessica Lee tallied the other shot on goal.
In goal, Marrelli became the fourth goalkeeper in RWU history to tally 300 career saves, making two in the contest, and the first to do so since Jen Garside completed the feat in 2009. JWU split time between Kyla Stamilio and Ava Vaughan, with each making a save.
The Hawks were stuck in the ninth minute as Yucius was able to take a shot off a press as she fired a shot from 28 yards out to tally the first goal of the game. The Hawks struck again, as D'Antonio cut a ball across the box to Dickinson, who finished for the goal off the one-time opportunity.
After the halftime break, D'Antonio played a ball from the right corner of the field, sending it to the six-yard box, which Deegan was then able to bury for the goal to seal the match.
Roger Williams (4-1-2, 2-0-0 CNE) will travel to Bridgewater State on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7:00 pm ahead of a Saturday, Sept. 27 matchup at the University of New England on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 12:00 pm.
Johnson & Wales (2-4-1, 1-1-0 CNE) will host Salve Regina on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 7:00 pm in non-conference action. The Wildcats will then hit the road for Saturday, Sept. 27, match at Gordon at 12:00 pm.
