MILTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team opened Conference of New England (CNE) play with a commanding 3-0 sweep over Curry College Wednesday evening inside Katz Gymnasium. The Hawks took the match by set scores of 25-10, 25-16, and 25-14 to secure their fourth win of the season.
Roger Williams (4-8, 1-0 CNE) set the tone early, jumping out to a 12-4 lead in the opening set behind a six-point run sparked by two kills from Kaydence Fish (Bedford, N.H). The Hawks later closed the frame on a 7-1 surge, highlighted by a pair of kills from Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y), to take the opener 25-10.
In the second set, Curry fought to keep it close, trailing just 12-10 midway through the frame. However, Roger Williams responded with a decisive 9-2 run keyed by three blocks from Fish and Emma Bosco's (North Andover, Mass.) steady setting, pulling away for a 25-16 victory.
The third set saw the Hawks storm ahead 10-3 on the strength of Felix and Angela West (Riverview, Fla.) at the net. Curry rallied to cut the deficit to 17-12, but Roger Williams answered once again, closing the match with an 8-2 run to finish the sweep at 25-14.
Felix led the Hawks with seven kills on a .583 hitting percentage, while Fish added seven kills on .500 hitting to go with five blocks. Bosco directed the offense with 24 assists and nine digs, while Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) paced the defense with 14 digs. As a team, Roger Williams hit .358 and posted 10 blocks, while holding Curry to a -.011 hitting mark.
Curry was paced by Kyla Martin with eight kills, while Meghan Abbott contributed six. Setter Jasmyne Fillippini recorded 18 assists and nine digs to guide the Colonels.
With the win, Roger Williams improves to 4-8 overall and 1-0 in CNE play, while Curry falls to 4-8 and 0-1 in the league.
The Hawks return home to Bristol, R.I., on Saturday, September 27, when they host UMass Boston (5-8, 0-0).
