HARTFORD, Conn. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team was able to withstand the Engineers of WPI, 25-14, and Bantams of Trinity, 24-19, in their two duals hosted by Trinity on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks opened the day against WPI, and after dropping the 125-pound match by major decision, the Hawks saw
Caden Bruseo earn a win by fall in 1:40 to take a 6-0 lead. The Hawks then saw
Shaun McLaughlin edge out Mason Medina by a 7-2 score, with
Matthew Castillo taking a win at 149 pounds by a 4-2 score to put the Hawks up 12-0.
Tommy Iasiello and
Matthew Gish each earned wins by scores of 3-1, and 4-0 respectively and
Tyrell Newmann capped off a stretch of six straight match wins by the Hawks to take a 21-4 advantage. The Engineers responded with wins by fall and major decision as they fell.
Against the Bantams, the Hawks continued to carry their momentum. After dropping to a 10-0 advantage to the Bantams, the Hawks responded with a win by Iasiello by tech fall ahead of a win by
Gordon Murray by major decision to cut the lead to one.
At 174 pounds, Newmann earned a win by tech fall ahead of
Joshua Nieroda earning a win by major decision to put the Hawks up by a score of 18-10. The Bantams then saw Luke Hulton. The Hawks added three points by
Jayden Toppan pinning Emre Sensoy ahead of an injury win by Alexander Schaeublin at 125 pounds.
Roger Williams (11-5) will take part in the Wildcat Open on Saturday, Jan. 24 hosted by Johnson & Wales, and then the NEWA Dual Championships at JWU on Sunday, Jan. 25.
