WEYMOUTH, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team opened their season on Saturday evening at The Weymouth Club, falling to the Lions of Emerson College, 4-3.
In doubles action, the Lions took the point as Filippo Nocchi and Connor Leung earned a 6-4 win at the No. 1 doubles spot over RWU's Bronson DeSisto (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Ryan Carroll (Holden, Mass.), as well as taking the No. 3 doubles match, 6-3, as Adam Alireza and Caiden Riebold defeated Tucker Taylor (Gonzales, Texas) and Iker Rodriguez Alcocer (Nuacalpan de Juarez, Mexico). The Hawks took a doubles match, with Camden Poitras (Londonderry, N.H.) and Will Hurlbut (Marion, Mass.) earning a 6-4 win over the Lions' pairing of Tai Finestone and Cameron McAllister.
In singles action, Nocchi took the top singles match, 6-3, 7-5, over DeSisto, with Leung following with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Carroll at No. 2 singles. The No. 3 singles match also went in favor of the Lions, with Alireza earning a 6-2, 6-2 win to secure the match. Poitras earned a win at No. 4 singles for the Hawks 2-6, 6-2, 9-1, with Rodriguez Alcocer earning a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) win at No. 5 singles. Rounding out singles play was Om Seth (Lincoln, R.I.), who also secured a win in his match at No. 6, earning the 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Roger Williams (2-2, 0-0 CNE) will next compete on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 1:00 pm at the University of New England. The Hawks will then be off until Sunday, Mar. 8 when they take on Marymount.
