BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team used a strong second quarter and dominant rebounding effort to defeat Gordon College, 75–62, on Saturday afternoon at the Student Recreation Center. The Hawks improved to 13–10 overall and 9–5 in Conference of New England (CNE) play with the home victory.
After a tightly contested opening quarter that saw RWU take a slim 16–14 lead, the Hawks created separation in the second period. Roger Williams outscored Gordon 23–15 in the frame, shooting 41.2 percent from the field while converting 8-of-9 free throws to carry a 39–29 advantage into halftime.
Roger Williams maintained control throughout the second half, extending its lead to as many as 22 points in the fourth quarter. The Hawks were especially effective inside, finishing with a 49–34 rebounding advantage and 38 points in the paint. RWU also capitalized at the free-throw line, shooting 23-of-26 (88.5 percent) from the stripe.
Chelsea Graiver (North Yarmouth, Maine) and Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) led the offensive effort with 14 points apiece. Graiver added two assists and two steals, while Coppola contributed five rebounds and a block. Chloe Richardson (Norwell, Mass.) chipped in 12 points, and Lilli Clark (Willimantic, Conn.) recorded a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Maia Riccio (Cranston, R.I) added nine points and eight boards, helping the Hawks control the glass.
Gordon was led by Leah McGarvey's 23 points and seven rebounds, but the Hawks' depth proved decisive, as RWU received 44 bench points in the victory.
Roger Williams will look to carry the momentum into its next CNE matchup against Johnson & Wales at home, Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 5:30 PM.
