Women’s Basketball: Late Run Lifts JWU Past Hawks, 60–54

BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team saw a fourth-quarter comeback fall just short on Tuesday evening, dropping a 60–54 decision to Johnson & Wales (Providence) inside the Student Recreation Center.

The Hawks opened strong, taking a 21–14 lead after the first quarter behind aggressive play inside and efficient free-throw shooting. RWU carried a 32–27 advantage into halftime relying on defense and rebounding to maintain control.

Johnson & Wales shifted momentum in the third quarter, outscoring the Hawks 16–7 as Roger Williams struggled to find its rhythm offensively. The Wildcats capitalized on turnovers and second-chance opportunities to take a 43–39 lead into the final period.

The fourth quarter featured multiple lead changes, including a late RWU advantage after back-to-back free throws from Chelsea Graiver (North Yarmouth, Maine) gave the Hawks a 52–50 edge with just over two minutes remaining. However, JWU responded with a key three-pointer from Isabella Suero and consecutive baskets down the stretch to regain control. The Wildcats closed the game at the free-throw line to seal the six-point victory.

Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) led Roger Williams with 21 points and nine rebounds, shooting 12-of-13 from the free-throw line. Graiver added 11 points, while Maia Riccio (Cranston, R.I) contributed seven points. Lilli Clark (Willimantic, Conn.) pulled down seven rebounds, and the Hawks held a 41–42 rebounding battle that remained competitive throughout the contest.

Roger Williams shot 84 percent from the free-throw line but struggled from the field, finishing 15-of-59 (25.4 percent), including 3-of-17 from three-point range. Despite holding JWU to 37.5 percent shooting overall, the Hawks were unable to overcome the third-quarter scoring drought.
Conference play continues Saturday, Feb. 21, at Endicott at 1:00 PM.
