FALL RIVER, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Men's Ice Hockey team suffered a 7-0 Conference of New England (CNE) loss to #7 University of New England (UNE) on Friday night at Driscoll Arena.
The Nor'Easters controlled the game from the jump, firing off 28 shots with 17 on goal in the first period while RWU only took three shots with two on goal. UNE scored first 14 minutes into the game as Nathan Chickering scored on a power play, assisted by Nick Marino and Dominic Murphy.
While Roger Williams held the 10-9 advantage on faceoffs, UNE had four different Nor'Easters score in the second period to bring the score to 5-0 heading into the final frame. Seth Murch tallied the first goal of the second period unassisted before Drew Olivieri found the back of the net 43 second later off of passes from Murphy and Chickering. Halfway through the second period, Kevin O'Keefe chipped in another goal, assisted by Chip Hamlett and Fernand-Olivier Perron. A minute later, Cam Bergeman brought the score to 5-0 with assists from Braxton Powers and Ike Keller.
UNE tacked on two more in the third period, as Jayden Price scored twice. Price scored first on a Roger Williams power play with an assist from Chickering, before scoring eight minutes later with a UNE power play goal on a pass from Bergeman to bring it to 7-0.
The Hawks took 27 shots overall with 12 being on goal, while UNE shot 68 times with 40 being on goal. The Nor'Easters finished 2-for-3 on the power play, while RWU went 0-for-4 on the power play advantage. UNE also held the advantage on faceoffs, winning 30 to Roger Williams' 27.
Harrison Chesney recorded the shutout for the Nor'Easters, stopping all 12 shots faced. Jacob Jaslow (Tomkins Cove, N.Y.) made 33 saves despite the loss.
Roger Williams will head to Biddeford, Maine to face off against UNE again on Saturday, Feb. 7 as part of the home-and-home series.
