CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Roger Williams University fell to MIT, 13–7, Thursday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Jack Barry Field.
Roger Williams opened the scoring midway through the first quarter when Jamie Anthony (Somers, Conn.) netted an unassisted goal with 13:50 remaining. Molly Schmitz (Hamden, Conn.) followed just over two minutes later with another unassisted tally to give the Hawks an early 2–0 advantage. MIT responded late in the quarter as Annica Lam scored off a pass from Ashley Thomas to cut the deficit to 2–1 heading into the second period.
The Engineers surged ahead in the second quarter with four consecutive goals. Ashley Thomas tied the game on a man-up opportunity before Laura Day gave MIT its first lead moments later off another Thomas assist. Samantha Moorhead and Eloise Shin added goals to extend the advantage to 5–2. Anthony stopped the run for Roger Williams with a goal assisted by Allie Shamberger (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) with 4:29 remaining, but Moorhead struck again in the closing seconds of the half to send MIT into the break with a 6–3 lead.
MIT extended its lead early in the third quarter when Moorhead scored just under two minutes into the period. Anthony responded for the Hawks with two straight goals, one unassisted and another off a pass from Shamberger, to pull Roger Williams within 7–5 heading into the final quarter.
The Engineers regained control in the fourth quarter, beginning with a goal by Eloise Shin and a man-up tally from Thomas to make it 9–5. Shamberger answered with a goal assisted by Miranda Hayes (South Burlington, Vt.), but MIT quickly countered with goals from Alexis Reinard and Thomas to stretch the lead to 11–6. Hayes scored with 4:31 remaining to trim the margin to four, but Reinard and Lam added late goals to secure the 13–7 victory.
Anthony led Roger Williams with four goals and four draw controls, while Shamberger recorded a goal and two assists. Schmitz finished with a goal and an assist, and Hayes added a goal and an assist. Goalkeeper Aizza Chase (Cohasset, Mass.) made seven saves for the Hawks.
MIT was paced by Ashley Thomas with three goals and five assists, while Samantha Moorhead and Annica Lam each scored three and two goals, respectively.
Roger Williams held a slight advantage in draw controls, 15–7, and ground balls, 18–17, while MIT finished with a 25–26 edge in shots.
Roger Williams (0-4, 0-0 CNE) will host Vassar on Saturday, Mar. 14, at 1:00 pm to round out Spring Break. The Hawks will then host Johnson & Wales for their Conference of New England (CNE) opener.
