Women's Lacrosse: Hawks Move to 2-0 in CNE Play with Win Over Golden Bears

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team moved to 2-0 in Conference of New England (CNE) play with a 13-4 victory over the Golden Bears of Western New England on Saturday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium.

The Hawks controlled play, taking 11 draw controls to the Golden Bears eight. The Hawks also out shot Western New England 29-17, with a 22-9 edge in shots on target. Roger Williams went a perfect 15-for-15 on clear attempts, with 21 total ground balls in the game, while recording a goal on their lone free position attempt.

Allie Shamberger (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) tallied seven points with a pair of goals and five assists, while having a caused turnover and ground ball. Miranda Hayes (South Burlington, Vt.) and Lauren Canata (West Springfield, Mass.) had six points, with five goals and one assist, and five points, respectively, with four goals and one assist. Hayes led the team with six draw controls, while Grace Rocheleau (West Hartford, Conn.) led the team in caused turnovers, with four in the contest. Hayes added three for the Hawks.

Western New England was led by Ella Henry who had two goals and Lyndsey Bunnell, who dished out a pair of assists. Lina Eves and Sydney Miles each had a goal in the game. Eves also had five draw controls in the game.

In net, Aizza Chase (Cohasset, Mass.) made five saves on nine attempts for Roger Williams, while the Golden Bears Emily Picolla had 10 saves on 26 opportunities.

The Hawks opened the scoring, striking just 1:12 into the opening stanza, with Canata tallying the first of her four goals in the frame, after a feed from Shamberger. Western New England leveled the score 2:39 later, with Eves scoring her 20th goal of the season. Canata then tallied her ninth of the season, before her 10th and 11th to wrap up the frame with a 4-1 lead after the first frame.

The Hawks maintained control in the second, shutting out Western New England in the frame. The Hawks scored their first of the quarter with 11:51 remaining, when Hayes scored her seventh goal of the season. The Hawks added two more in the final 3:27, with Shamberger adding goals 17 and 18 of the campaign.

In the third, the Hawks continued to apply offensive pressure, opening with a goal by Hayes just 42 seconds into the quarter. A goal by Ella Henry put the Golden Bear deficit to is, but back-to-back goals by Hayes in the quarter pushed the RWU lead back to eight. After Sydney Miles scored for Western New England, Hayes added her 11th of the year, taking an 11-3 lead into the final frame.

The Hawks would add two more while holding Henry and the golden Bears to one in the frame, closing out the game.

Roger Williams (2-5, 2-0 CNE) will host Gordon on Wednesday, Mar. 25 at 4:00 pm. The Hawks will then end the week on Saturday, Mar. 28 at 3:00 pm.
