BEVERLY, Mass. — The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team dropped a 16-7 decision to Endicott in a CNE matchup on Saturday afternoon.
Endicott struck first in the first period with back-to-back goals from Leah Black and Emerson Clark, putting the Gulls up 2-0. Jamie Anthony (Somers, Conn.) put the Hawks on the board a few minutes later, but the Gulls responded with two more to bring the score to 4-1. Mikayla Fey (Bethlehem, Pa.) responded with a goal fed from Allie Shamberger (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) with one minute remaining in the first period.
The Gulls opened the second period with a goal from Abbie Belleville to lengthen their lead to 5-2. The Hawks stayed in it as Miranda Hayes (South Burlington, Vt.) netted two unassisted goals to bring the deficit to 5-4. The Gulls responded with two more of their own to make it 7-4 at the half.
In the third period, Endicott struck first with a goal from Clare Wendell to put them ahead 8-4. RWU struck again as Hayes brought the score to 8-5. The Gulls finished the period with three more goals to bring their lead to 11-5 going into the final period.
Endicott exploded for four goals in the opening of the fourth period to bring their lead to 15-5. The Hawks responded with two more goals, one from Hayes and one from Mollee Merritt (Cheshire, Conn.) to move the deficit to 15-7. Ava Amara netted one more goal for the Gulls, to bring the final score to 16-7.
Endicott out shot the Hawks 33-14 (22-8 on goal) in the contest. RWU struggled with possession, committing 23 turnovers to Endicott's 16. Roger Williams snagged 14 ground balls to Endicott's 21; however, the Hawks led the draw controls 15-10.
The Hawks were led by Hayes who had four goals, while Anthony, Fey, and Merritt each netted one each. Aizza Chase (Cohassett, Mass.) was in net for Roger Williams, making 12 saves.
Endicott was led by Black with four goals and two assists, while Belleville and Clark each contributed three goals. In net for the Gulls, Severine Michel and Faith Minickene combined for three saves, backed by a defense that limited RWU to just eight shots on goal.
Roger Williams (3-6, 3-1 CNE) will be back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 31 as they host Nichols in a CNE matchup. Endicott (7-1, 4-0 CNE) will head to Colby on Wednesday, April 1 for a nonconference game against Colby.
