BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team defeated Bridgewater State University (BSU) 5-2 in their second match of the day on Tuesday night. Prior to the match, the Hawks celebrated their seven seniors: Steven Mathew, Camden Poitras, Ben Palmer, Iker Rodriguez Alcocer, Jackson Slattery, Ryan Carroll, and Colin Belmore.
The Hawks swept the doubles matches to jump to an early 1-0 lead heading into singles. Camden Poitras (Londonderry, N.H.) and Will Hurlbut (Marion, Mass.) finished first at No. 2 Doubles defeating BSU's Will Horton and Ryan Hebert 6-1. In the No. 1 Doubles spot, the duo of Bronson DeSisto (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Ryan Carroll (Holden, Mass.) defeated Adam Beatrice and Khiem Nguyen 6-0, while at No. 3 doubles, Edward White (Higganum, Conn.) and James Birbara (West Hartford, Conn.) defeated Tom Ayson and Lucas Anthony 7-5.
Hurlbut earned a quick 6-2, 6-1 win over the Bears' Beatrice at No. 2 Singles to bring the Hawks to 2-0. Cooper Brown (Plano, Texas) fell to Anthony Lucas 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 Singles to bring the Bears within one for the match at 2-1.
At No. 6 Singles, Jackson Slattery (Watertown, Conn.) extended the Hawks' lead as he picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hebert, before Nathan Belmore (Lakeville, Mass.) clinched the win for the Hawks at No. 4 Singles defeating Nguyen in a hard-fought 6-3, 6-3 win.
The Bears put one more point on the board as Horton took the 4-6, 6-4 (10-5) No. 1 Singles win against Om Seth (Lincoln, R.I.). Rounding out the match, Steven Mathew (Bayport, N.Y.) battled to a 7-5, 6-4 win over Ayson.
Roger Williams (13-4, 6-0 CNE) has had their match at Endicott on Saturday, Apr 4 postponed and will take the court next when the Hawks host WNE on Wednesday, Apr. 8.
