BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team delivered a dominant performance on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping Western New England 7–0 in Conference of New England (CNE) action.
The Hawks opened the match by taking all three doubles contests to secure the early point. Steven Mathew (Bayport, N.Y.) and Tucker Taylor (Gonzales, Texas) closed out their doubles match with a 6–1 victory at the No. 3 position to give RWU a 1–0 advantage. The pair of Bronson Desisto (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Ryan Carroll (Holden, Mass.) followed with another 6–1 victory at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Camden Poitras (Londonderry, N.H.) and Will Hurlbut (Marion, Mass.) closed the doubles portion with a 6–3 win.
Roger Williams continued its momentum in singles competition, winning every match to complete the shutout. Nathan Belmore (Lakeville, Mass.) put the Hawks up 2-0, with a 6–1, 6–2 win at No. 6. At No. 3 singles, Poitras controlled his match with a 6–0, 6–0 sweep. before Carroll followed with a 6–0, 6–2 victory at the No. 2 spot, clinching the match for the Hawks.
The Hawks sealed the remaining matches with Om Seth (Lincoln, R.I.) claiming a 6–1, 6–0 victory at No. 5 singles and DeSisto picked up the win at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win. Hurlbut delivered one of the most competitive matches of the day at No. 4 singles, battling through a tight contest before securing the win 6–2, 7–5 (7-5) to close out the match
Roger Williams (13-4, 7-0 CNE) next match will be at Colby-Sawyer on April 11 at 1:00 pm, the Hawks will then host Gordon on Tuesday, Apr. 14 at 4:00 pm in their final home tuneup for the CNE Tournament.
