WATERVILLE, Maine – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team fell to Colby, 17-6, on Sunday afternoon in nonconference action at Bill Alfond Field.
Colby jumped out quickly, scoring the first goal of the game before Miranda Hayes (South Burlington, Vt.) responded for Roger Williams with an unassisted strike to tie the contest at 1-1 early in the first quarter. The Mules then seized control of the game with a dominant scoring run, netting seven unanswered goals to close the opening period with an 8-1 advantage.
The Hawks found momentum in the second quarter when Allie Shamberger (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) converted off a pass from Jamie Anthony (Somers, Conn.) to cut into the deficit, but Colby continued to generate offense and carried a 12-2 lead into halftime.
Roger Williams showed resilience in the second half. Shamberger recorded two goals in the third quarter, including a man-up tally and a free-position strike, while the Hawks worked to generate more scoring chances offensively. Colby answered with three goals of their own in the period to maintain a 15-4 advantage heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth, Molly Schmitz (Hamden, Conn.) added a goal for the Hawks before Hayes scored her second of the afternoon late in the quarter. Colby closed out the contest with a final goal to secure the 17-6 victory.
Shamberger led Roger Williams with three goals, while Hayes finished with two goals and Schmitz added one. Anthony contributed an assist, and Hayes and Anthony each helped control the draw throughout the contest.
Roger Williams finished the game with 15 shots and 12 draw controls, while Colby totaled 30 shots and 13 draw controls. Goalkeepers Aizza Chase (Cohasset, Mass.) and Anna Sullivan (Marshfield, Mass.) combined for five saves for the Hawks.
Roger Williams will look to bounce back as the Hawks play their last regular season game at home against Curry on Wednesday, Apr. 22 at 4:00 PM.
