BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University (RWU) Women's Lacrosse team produced a strong offensive effort paired with strong defense on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Bridgewater State 15–6 in non-conference action at Bayside Field.
The Hawks came out fast, scoring three goals in the opening five minutes to take control early. Jamie Anthony (Somers, Conn.) opened the scoring on a free-position opportunity before Mikayla Fey (Bethlehem, Pa.) and Meaghan Holmes (Pembroke, Mass.) added goals to quickly push RWU ahead 3–0. Bridgewater State briefly answered with a goal midway through the first quarter, but the Hawks closed the period strong with tallies from Anthony and Lauren Canata (West Springfield, Mass.) to take a 5–1 lead.
Roger Williams continued its offensive surge in the second quarter. Miranda Hayes (South Burlington, Vt.) opened the scoring before Bridgewater State responded with three straight goals to trim the deficit to 6–4. The Hawks answered immediately, finishing the half with a four-goal run that included goals from Anthony, Hayes, Allie Shamberger (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), and Mollee Merritt (Cheshire, Conn.), before a goal by Kate Fitzpatrick closed out the half.
The Hawks kept the momentum in the second half, outscoring the Bears 5–1 over the final two quarters. Hayes added two more goals while Shamberger and Noelle Finucane (Marshfield, Mass.) each found the back of the net to secure the win.
Hayes led the offensive effort with four goals while also earning 10 drawcontrols and six ground balls., while Anthony and Shamberger each recorded three goals with a pair of assists. Canata, Finucane, Fey, Holmes, and Merritt each added a goal for the Hawks in the balanced scoring attack.
In net, Aizza Chase (Cohasset, Mass.) played the full game for Roger Williams, making four saves while allowing six goals. The Hawks also controlled possession throughout the game, winning 15 draw controls compared to eight for Bridgewater State.
With the win, Roger Williams improves to 6–6 overall and 5–1 in Conference of New England play. The Hawk's next game will be Senior Day at home against Wentworth on Apr 11 at 3:00 PM.
