BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team split a pair of matches during Saturday's tri-match at the Paolino Recreation Center. The Hawks fell to Coast Guard 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-12, 25-21) before earning a 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 25-17) victory over Worcester State. RWU finished the day with a 4-8 record.
For the Hawks, Angela West (Riverview, Fla.) totaled 23 kills on a .450 hitting percentage across the two matches, including 16 kills on a .600 clip against Worcester State. Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) contributed 25 kills, 27 digs and three service aces. Claire Davis (Trumbull, Conn.) added 14 kills and 10 total blocks, while Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) anchored the back row with 48 digs. Ava McGonagle (Reading, Mass.) distributed 51 assists and recorded 10 digs and three aces.
For Coast Guard, Abigail Schweitzer and Corey Lemmer recorded 12 kills apiece. Ava Ahokovi finished with 21 assists, 17 digs and two service aces, while Courtney Shire collected 18 digs. Worcester State was led by Kaitlyn Anthony with 12 kills, while Rylee Valstyn recorded 10 kills on a .556 hitting percentage with three aces.
Coast Guard 3, Roger Williams 1
Roger Williams held a 20-18 advantage late in the opening set before Coast Guard scored seven of the final nine points to earn a 25-22 victory.
The Hawks responded in the second frame. With the teams tied at 8-8, RWU scored four consecutive points behind the serve of Hernandez to build a 12-8 lead. Roger Williams extended its advantage to 22-15 before closing out a 25-19 win. The Hawks hit .226 in the set, while Hernandez delivered two aces.
Coast Guard broke open the third set by scoring 12 of 13 points after the teams battled to an 8-8 tie. The Bears pulled away for a 25-12 victory and carried the momentum into the fourth.
RWU scored the opening five points of the final frame, but Coast Guard answered with eight consecutive points. The Hawks regained a 15-14 advantage and later pulled even at 18-18 before the Bears used a 5-1 run to take control and secure a 25-21 win.
Felix led RWU with eight kills and 11 digs, while West and Anna O'Toole (Wilbraham, Mass.) added seven kills apiece. Hernandez collected 27 digs, and Ava Lombardo (Newtown, Conn.) completed a double-double with 26 assists and 12 digs while adding four service aces. Roger Williams finished with a 10-6 advantage in team blocks.
Roger Williams 3, Worcester State 1
The Hawks trailed 6-3 early in the opening set before battling back to take a 12-9 advantage. Worcester State eventually pulled even at 21-21, but Roger Williams scored the final four points to take the frame, 25-21.
RWU held a 20-18 lead in the second set before Worcester State closed on a 7-2 run to earn a 25-22 victory and even the match.
Roger Williams responded by building a 12-8 advantage in the third. The Lancers trimmed the margin to 20-18, but the Hawks scored five of the final eight points to secure a 25-21 win.
The Hawks never trailed in the fourth set and closed the match on a 9-3 run for a 25-17 victory. RWU recorded 17 kills with just one error in the frame for a .593 hitting percentage.
Felix led Roger Williams with 17 kills and 16 digs, while West finished with 16 kills on a .600 hitting percentage and three block assists. Davis added 12 kills on a .556 clip with three block assists. McGonagle directed the offense with 50 assists, nine digs and three aces, while Hernandez contributed 21 digs. As a team, RWU hit .326 and recorded 62 kills.
Roger Williams returns to the Paolino Recreation Center on Wednesday, Sept. 23, when it hosts Suffolk University at 6 p.m.
