BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team opened Conference of New England play with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-19) victory over Suffolk University on Wednesday evening at the Paolino Recreation Center.
Roger Williams was led by Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.), who recorded a match-high 14 kills on a .278 hitting percentage while adding seven digs, a service ace and a block assist. Ava McGonagle (Reading, Mass.) directed the offense with 22 assists and delivered a match-high six service aces to go with six digs. Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) anchored the back row with a match-high 16 digs, four assists and an ace.
Angela West (Riverview, Fla.) finished with six kills and three block assists, while Anna O'Toole (Wilbraham, Mass.) added five kills and three block assists. Kaydence Fish (Bedford, N.H.) contributed four kills on a .429 hitting percentage, three block assists and an ace.
For Suffolk (7-5, 0-1 CNE), Kaylee Perrault led the offense with six kills, while Abby Tolhurst added five. Emmy Thomander recorded four kills on six attacks for a .667 hitting percentage and added a service ace. Aislinn Lanigan distributed 15 assists, and Kathy Mo collected a team-high 16 digs.
Roger Williams finished with a 34-18 advantage in kills and a 12-5 edge in service aces. The Hawks hit .231 while limiting Suffolk to a negative-.012 hitting percentage and held a 6-2 advantage in team blocks.
Suffolk scored the first two points of the opening set before RWU answered and moved ahead 4-3. The Hawks used a five-point run to extend their advantage to 11-4 before Joci Wall (Ann Arbor, Mich.) delivered three aces during another six-point stretch that made it 20-8. Roger Williams hit .455 and recorded six aces in the frame on its way to a 25-12 win.
RWU scored eight of the opening nine points in the second set, with Hernandez contributing an ace during the early run. Suffolk trimmed the deficit to 8-6, but the Hawks responded by building a 20-12 advantage. The Rams pulled within three at 20-17 before Roger Williams closed the set on a 5-1 run, receiving consecutive aces from McGonagle to secure a 25-18 victory.
The third set featured six ties and four lead changes. Roger Williams broke a 7-7 tie by scoring four of the next five points and later extended its advantage to 18-12. Suffolk battled back to pull within two at 21-19, but the Hawks scored the final four points, including consecutive kills from O'Toole, to complete the sweep with a 25-19 win.
Roger Williams (5-8, 1-0 CNE) returns to action Saturday, Sept. 26, when it travels to Beverly, Mass., to face Endicott College at 2 p.m.
