Box Score BEVERLY, Mass. – A goal by
Laurin Pendleton (Southwick, Mass.) in the closing seconds of regulation proved to be the difference in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship as the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team captured its first TCCC title with a 1-0 win over Endicott College Saturday afternoon.
With neither team able to score over the first 89 minutes of the game, the Hawks appeared to be headed for its third straight overtime game in this season's playoffs. The turning point came in the final minute when
Katie Fusaro (Hopkinton, Mass.) came down the far left sideline and dropped in a well-placed cross to Pendleton inside the box. The 6-0 freshman forward used her height to her advantage to outjump the Gull defenders and head in the game winner with only 19 seconds left in the game.
The last-second goal came in a game where Endicott had chances to score and secure its shot at a third straight TCCC title, but timely defense by Roger Williams kept the contest at a stalemate. Endicott had an opportunity early in the first half to score, when Kayla Plante (Sanford, Maine) eluded two Hawk defenders off of a through ball from Colleen Pepin (Fairhaven, Mass.). The scoring chance ended when a third Hawk defender came in and disrupted Plante's shot, forcing her to push it left of the goal.
A second opportunity came through the second half when Pepin put up a shot from 25 yards out, heading towards the left post. Hawk goalie
Jen Garside (Londonderry, N.H.) made an impressive save, going backwards and punching the ball out of play.
Garside made six saves for the Roger Williams in the clinching victory, while Gull keeper Amy Meuse (Saugus, Mass.) suffered the loss, making seven saves for Endicott.
The win gives Roger Williams marks the first time in three tries that the Hawks were able to defeat Endicott in the TCCC Championship game. The Gulls had won the previous two TCCC championships over the Hawks.
Roger Williams (18-2-0, 12-1-0) clinches an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III National Tournament, while Endicott (15-3-2, 12-0-1 TCCC) must wait to see if it has received an At-Large bid. The full tournament field will be released Monday morning.
