Women's Basketball falls short on the road at Colby-Sawyer

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team continued their strong play as they defeated Roger Williams, 78-54, Saturday afternoon.  It was a team effort as 13 players scored baskets, highlighted by the performance of senior Emma Pasquale (Eliot, Maine).  With the win, the Chargers improve to 12-6 overall and 5-1 in TCCC action, while the Hawks dropped to 5-14 and 3-4 in conference play.

Pasquale played one of her best games of the year as she tallied a game-high 17 points, along with a team-high eight rebounds and four assists.  Her biggest accomplishment came at the 9:37 mark of the second half, when Pasquale recorded her seventh block of the game, which not only was a team season-high, but more importantly, it broke the school's all-time career blocks record with 224.  Pasquale passes Rebecca Hooker ('84) as the all-time leader.

At the start of the game, Colby-Sawyer jumped out to an early 12-0 lead over the Hawks behind the play of Pasquale and junior Terri Duffy (Marshfield, Mass.).  Pasquale registered 13 points and three rebounds, as Duffy scored 12 of her own and collected four boards.  As a team, the Chargers shot 51.6% from the field and a perfect 8-8 from the charity stripe.

Despite, the Chargers hot start, Roger Williams, was able to cut the lead down to eight, as sophomore guard Kate Malenczak (Sayville, N.Y.) scored 10 points on 4-8 shooting, including 2-5 from beyond the arc.  The Chargers offense, which earned 13 assists on 16 made field goals, remained hot, and increased their lead to 42-29 heading into the locker room.

In the second half, the Charges defense stepped up, behind Pasquale's dominating post presence.   The team held Roger Williams to 10% from the field and collected 17 steals.  Freshman Maggie Rossi (Fairhaven, Mass.) played well in the half as she finished the game with 10 points.  Sophomore Katelyn Stravinsky (Norwelll, Mass.) scored nine points on three three-point field goals, along with six rebounds.  Duffy finished with 13 points.

For the Hawks, freshman Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.) collected a team-high 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench.  Jennifer Youngquist (Sandwich, Mass.) had a solid afternoon with seven points, seven rebounds and two assists.  Roger Williams was outrebounded by only two, but held a large spread in second chance points 20-13.

The Chargers will now start a three-game road trip, beginning with Endicott on Wednesday, February 4, for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off.  Roger Williams takes on local conference rival Salve Regina Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
