Volleyball Wins as Dolan Records 1,000th Career Kill

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Volleyball team won 3-0 over the visitors from the University of New England Wednesday night.  In the third game, senior Kristina Dolan (Glenmont, N.Y) recorded her 1,000th career kill, an accomplishment that has only been done two other times in school history.

Head Coach Bret Stothart had high praises for Dolan saying, “What Kristina accomplished is truly impressive especially considering only two other people have hit over 1,000 kills in the 28 year history of Roger Williams volleyball.”  Coach Stothart continued, complementing his team's play stating, “The team came in mentally prepared and confident which led to some really strong plays both offensively and defensively.”

The first game started with RWU going on a 10-1 run, and continued to go the Hawks' way as they won 25-17 on a spike by Natasha Sopchak (Rhinebeck, N.Y.).  The second game was all RWU as the hosts were victorious by a score of 25-8, finished on a kill by Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.).  The third game was much more evenly matched as the teams went back and forth with the Hawks getting the final nod by a score of 25-22, with the final point coming on an ace by Kelsey Twarog (Barkhamsted, Conn.).  The visitors showed tremendous effort, going on a 7-0 run at one point in the contest behind serves by Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.).

The Hawks performed well in the three sets, improving their overall record to 15-8 and 5-1 in the TCCC.  Dion and Dolan both totaled 13 kills on the night, while Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) posted 22 assists in two games and senior Caryn Lecca (Ludlow, Mass.) recorded 10 in game three.  Junior Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) led the team on defense, recording 14 digs.  The visitors were paced by Kristen Edwards (Laconia, N.H.) who had seven kills, and Ellen Choinski (Saunderstown, R.I.) who chipped in with 14 assists.  The Nor'easters dropped to 7-11 and 3-3 in TCCC play.

UNE will be hosting Salve Regina on Saturday at 11:00 am.  The Hawks are next in action at home on Saturday in the “Dig Pink” game against Colby-Sawyer at 1:00 pm.
