Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team was defeated Tuesday evening by a score of 75-53 against a talented team from Connecticut College. The score was notched at the Half, but the Camels outscored the Hawks 41-19 in the second frame to get the win.
The first frame saw both teams get a crack at the lead, with several ties and lead changes. The Camels got a three point lead with just under ten minutes remaining, until Elizabeth Kilzi (Waverly, Pa.) drained a three to notch things up at 17 all. The Hawks would then pull away at several points getting three point leads, only to see the Camels' Emily Cummings (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) fire away from behind the arc to bring it back to all-even. At the end of the half there were a total of six lead changes and eight ties.
The Camels got off to an incredible start in the second half, going on a 16-2 run to get things going. The blazing start was propelled by the duo of Jennifer Shinall (Redding, Conn.) and Jacqueline Shinall (Redding, Conn.) who teamed up for several layups and threes, accounting for 14 of those 16 points. The Hawks would do their best to claw back into the game, but the visitors kept them in check for the remainder of the second half and maintained a 10-15 point lead until the final tick of the clock.
The Camels can attribute the win on the strength of their perimeter shooting as shot 45.8% from the field and 56.3% from three point range. The Hawks shot 35.7% overall and 21.4% from behind the arc. Jennifer Shinall led the Camels with 20 points, seven assists, six steals and five rebounds while Jacqueline Shinall chipped in with 11 points, 3 assists and Cummings would contribute 11 points as well. Leading in rebounds for the Camels was Rita Holak (Windham, N.H.) with six, five of them offensive.
Bright spot on the night for the home team was Ryan Weekes (Worcester, Mass.) who went 8-8 from the field including a long two-pointer that just beat out the shot clock, and 5-6 from the line for a total of 21 points. Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) led the team in rebounds with ten and chipped in with seven points as well, and Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.) had nine points and eight rebounds, six of which were offensive.
This was the final game for the Hawks before the Christmas break, they return to action on January 6th at home against Rhode Island College. The Camels have one more game on Thursday before they take a break from competition as they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. for a game against Pine Manor College. Connecticut College improves to 4-3 while the Hawks drop to 3-6 heading into vacation.
